Licensing
Windows Server Datacenter is licensed to us under SPLA and the cost is already in the monthly price of the server. You do not bring a key, you do not activate anything, and the licence ends cleanly when the server does.
2016 is in extended support only and reaches end of life in January 2027. Start new projects on 2025 or 2022.
Windows is available on every plan except Lite. The licence is in the price shown.

No. The Datacenter SPLA licence is included in the server price on the Start plan and above. There is no per-core charge, no key to find and nothing to activate — the image comes licensed.
One gigabyte of memory is not enough for Windows Server to be usable once it has booted, patched and accepted a remote desktop session. We would rather not sell it than sell something that frustrates you. Start at the Start plan.
Two administrative sessions are included, which is the Windows Server default. Beyond that you need Remote Desktop Services CALs, which you buy from Microsoft or a reseller and install yourself — we cannot license those through SPLA on your behalf.
Five to fifteen minutes, against under a minute for Linux. The image has to be expanded onto the volume and sysprepped for the new hardware. The panel shows progress and emails you when the Administrator password is ready.
Yes, and it is one of the more common uses. SQL Server Express, MSSQL with your own licence, IIS, .NET workloads and line-of-business applications all run normally. Size the memory generously: Windows plus SQL Server will use everything you give it.
RDP handles latency better than VNC does, but geography still wins. If your team is in São Paulo, put the server in São Paulo rather than in Frankfurt and the difference will be obvious.
Choose the release at order time. The Administrator password appears in the panel as soon as the build finishes.
