Why KVM matters

Container hosting sold as a VPS is not the same product.

A lot of cheap "VPS" hosting is OpenVZ or LXC: you share the host kernel with every other tenant. It is cheaper to run and it mostly works, right up until you need something the host kernel will not give you.

  • Load any module. WireGuard, ZFS, custom netfilter targets — all fine on KVM, all blocked on a shared kernel.
  • Memory is real. No burst allocation that vanishes when a neighbour gets busy, and no out-of-memory kills triggered by another tenant.
  • Nested virtualisation. Docker and k3s work out of the box; so do the odd cases like running a VM inside your VM for a build sandbox.
  • You can break it safely. A broken bootloader or a bad fstab is recoverable from the VNC console instead of being a support ticket.

Linux questions

Real root on a real kernel. KVM gives the guest its own kernel, so you can load modules, run nested containers, change the scheduler, mount FUSE filesystems and rebuild the kernel if you want to. None of that is possible on OpenVZ or LXC hosting.
